Official Launch of Réalt na Mara by Robert McColgan, Howth Friday 15th of February at 10am

A Fingal school choir will join the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Anthony Lavin, and Fingal County Council’s Chief Executive, Paul Reid, at the launch of artist Robert McColgan’s Réalt na Mara sculpture in Howth on Friday, February 15 at 10 am

Fifth and sixth class children of Scoil Mhuire, Howth will perform at the western spit of Howth’s east pier where Robert McColgan’s Réalt na Mara sculpture is located.

The sculpture was created by Robert McColgan, former lecturer in Fine Art Sculpture at DIT. Robert has created many large scale sculptural works, including the Beehives that can be seen on the M1, Balbriggan bypass.

The sculpture created in a marine grade stainless steel, was envisaged as a beacon of light and hope and a compass point to guide all who journey to and from the sea. The location of the work was decided with the co-operation of the Department of Agriculture, Food & Marine and with the continued support of the Howth/Sutton Community Council.

Fingal County Council’s Public Art co-ordinator, Caroline Cowley said: “The Réalt na Mara sculpture is a unique feature of the popular coastal walk in Howth and I am delighted that we have an opportunity to recognise the talent of its creator, Robert McColgan.”

Fingal County Council’s Art Office is installing a special naming plaque at the work to celebrate the artist, the commissioners and the those involved in its installation on Friday, 15 of February at 10am where Councillor Anthony Lavin, Mayor of Fingal and Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, Paul Reid will officially launch the work.

Refreshments will be served afterwards at the Howth Yacht Club and all are welcome.
